On 5th September, 1917, the 5th London battalion of 169 Brigade, 56th Division moved into the front line at Lebucquiere in the Louverval sector of the Western Front where they remained until relieved on 13th September. On 10th September, the day on which Charles Pugh was killed, the battalion diary recorded that work on the trenches continued and that the enemy shelled the top of the forward communication trench hourly throughout the night.
